Eureka County: Eureka Courthouse

Situated in Eureka, Nevada, at the junction of Bateman Street and North Main Street (Route 50), stands an exquisite edifice that has served as the hub of justice in Eureka County for almost 140 years.

The initial Eureka County Courthouse, located on the same site, was crafted from a repurposed ice-skating rink that was generously donated by a judge shortly after the establishment of Eureka County in 1873.

Like numerous structures within the town of Eureka, this courthouse was constructed from wood. Unfortunately, a fire ravaged countless wooden buildings, compelling the authorities to devise plans for a replacement that would be more resilient.

Three designs were proposed, and ultimately, George F. Costerisan’s Italianate rendition was selected, incorporating elements from the other two designs. Construction commenced in 1879, culminating in its completion in 1880.

The frontal facade boasts five bays, demarcated by brick pilasters that ascend to a metal-bracketed cornice. The first floor centers the entrance doorway, while the second floor features a petite wooden balcony. Flanking the entrance are two bells; one hailing from Cincinnati, Ohio, and the other from San Francisco, California. These bells once functioned as the town’s fire alarms.

On the second floor rests the courtroom, acknowledged as one of the most impeccably preserved public spaces in the state. It features a pressed-tin ceiling and a suspended gallery with seating for approximately 100 individuals.

The judge’s bench and balustrade are fashioned from Spanish cedar, while the witness box, notable for its semi-circular design, is positioned directly in front of the judge’s bench. In 1995, the edifice underwent renovations to comply with code regulations.

The foundation was fortified, and the exterior and interior woodwork, temporarily removed during construction for protection, were meticulously refinished. Notably, a vestibule was added just inside the structure, resulting in the protrusion of the front door.
