The 1879 Eureka Sentinel Newspaper Building now serves as the home of the Eureka Sentinel Museum. Its function as the Newspaper Office and residence lasted for over 80 years, from 1879 to 1960. In 1982, the county historical museum was established on the ground floor of the building.
Later, in June of 2000, the museum underwent expansion to encompass both floors. Through its exhibits, the Eureka Sentinel Museum offers insights into the history of Eureka.
Downstairs, an authentic press room from the 1800s awaits, adorned with posters once printed by the Eureka Sentinel and affixed to the walls. Every piece of press equipment on display is original, providing a glimpse into the newspaper production methods during Eureka’s prosperous times.
Moving on to the mining history room, visitors will find tools from the early mining days, as well as significant artifacts such as historic stock certificates, ledgers, and personal items belonging to miners.
Eureka’s Lead & Silver strikes in the 1860s marked the town’s beginnings. Meanwhile, upstairs, visitors can explore exhibitions depicting life in Eureka’s early days: a glimpse into school life, a parlor, and kitchen displaying various items that evoke memories of grandma’s house. The museum also showcases items from multiple fire companies, fraternal organizations, and military uniforms from both world wars.
While strolling down the upstairs hall, an intriguing window offers a view of the Eureka Barber Shop from the late 1800s, complete with an oak barber chair.
Lastly, be sure not to miss the gift shop where you can find books about Eureka’s history, locally made soap and pottery, or that special gift to commemorate your visit to Eureka, Nevada.
