Situated on the banks of the Carson River in Lyon County, Nevada, Fort Churchill State Historic Park encompasses 451 acres dedicated to commemorating the pioneer history of the region. Its establishment as an official Nevada State Park took place in 1957.
Originally constructed by the Union Army in 1861, the deserted fort initially functioned as a strategic outpost with the purpose of safeguarding nearby farms from raids by American Indian groups. Serving as a supply station and resting place for soldiers, the fort was decommissioned in 1869. Subsequently, during the mid-1900s, it became a popular attraction for ghost hunters and enthusiasts captivated by the paranormal activity associated with the site.
In 1957, the park was generously bestowed upon the Nevada Department of Natural Resources, leading to its restoration and preservation in honor of the state’s pioneer history. Today, the original and reconstructed fort buildings, which have been designated on the National Register of Historic Places, are open to exploration through interpretive programs and guided tours.
In addition to its historical buildings, the park features a picnic area, beautifully landscaped grounds, and an extensive network of trails, offering visitors the opportunity to fully immerse themselves in the rich history of the area.
