Situated in the town of Virginia City, Nevada, the Virginia City Historic District holds the title of the most complete authentic western town in the United States. It has earned the nickname “the real west” due to its meticulous preservation and architectural genuineness.
Originally established during the silver rush era, Virginia City came into existence in 1859 after the discovery of silver ore in the nearby hills. With rapid growth, it quickly became the largest hub of population between Denver and San Francisco. Overnight, the town became the economic epicenter of Nevada, renowned for its superior products and services.
At the heart of Virginia City, the Comstock Mining District served as the main attraction, housing numerous mining companies during its heyday. While mining activities have ceased, the Virginia City Historic District stands unchanged. Strolling through its streets allows visitors to immerse themselves in the atmosphere of the old west.
Within the historic district, an array of buildings associated with mining, including saloons, general stores, a theater, churches, and hotels, can be found.

Having been designated as one of the earliest National Historic Landmarks in 1961, the Virginia City Historic District also holds a place on the National Register of Historic Places and is a proud member of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. In 2019, the district joyously celebrated its 160th anniversary.
